Lorient Agglomération works with local authorities and associations to protect the breeding sites of the Collared Pratincole on the coast of Lorient. The Collared Pratincole is a protected and vulnerable species that lays its eggs directly on the sand. Its eggs, almost invisible as they blend in with their surroundings, rest on the sand and dunes. A close approach, a loose dog, or repeated visits can sometimes compromise a nest. The situation illustrates a simple reality: on the coast, the same space welcomes simultaneously very different uses. For residents and visitors, the beach is a place of relaxation and leisure. For the Collared Pratincole, it is above all a place of survival. After the arrival of breeding couples in the spring, the breeding period extends until the end of summer, before the post-nuptial gatherings of adults and young of the year. The bird then begins its migration to West Africa or the Mediterranean basin. To cover this distance, it depends directly on the energy reserves accumulated during its stay on the coast.
